KENORA, ON - December 18, 2009 – Greg Rickford, MP for Kenora, on behalf of the Minister of Heritage, announced today the Government of Canada’s support of $6,110 to the Kenora Catholic District School Board for an event on January 4th that will bring together students in celebration of the Olympics. Anglophone, Francophone, and First Nations students from Kenora and Red Lake will gather in Kenora to celebrate the arrival of the Olympic torch.
Activities will include a multilingual opening ceremony in French, English & Ojibway, a multi-school Torch Relay and various competitions including hockey, skating, snowshoeing, slalom, curling, snowboarding. High school students will have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills as they mentor younger students and facilitate events.
“I am especially proud to be an MP of the Host Country for the 2010 Olympics,” said Rickford. “As we move out of the holidays, I know the Torch Ceremonies will get the Olympic spirit moving across the country. I am delighted that the students of Kenora and Red Lake will have an opportunity to participate in the Olympic Torch Relay including some of their own games.”
The Olympic torch will be in Kenora on January 4th. Festivities will begin at 6:00 pm on the Kenora Harbourfront with the torch arriving at 7:00 pm. Everyone is invited and encouraged to come out and celebrate!
