THUNDER BAY, ON - February 1, 2010 – The Lakehead Express (LEX) Under 18 Women’s Team experienced
heartbreak in a semi-final loss, as the Erin Mills Eagles defeated the LEX Women in penalty shots at
the 2010 Ontario Indoor Cup.
In their first match of the group stage, which took place on Saturday January 30th, 2010, the LEX
Women defeated the North Mississauga Panthers 2-1. After falling behind early in the game, the LEX
was saved by some second-half heroics courtesy of Amanda Mithrush, who scored twice in the final
minutes to win the game. One goal was all the LEX needed in their second match versus Glen Shields,
as Jenna Gustafson scored the game winner in a 1-0 final. In their final match of the group stage, the
Burlington Sting ended LEX's winning streak with a 3-1 victory, a solo effort from Jenna Gustafson
rounded out the scoring for the LEX.
After finishing second in their round robin group, the LEX was matched up in the semi-final with the
Erin Mills Eagles. Kicking off Sunday, January 31st at 11:00 a.m. (EDT) the LEX found themselves in
an early 0-2 deficit. After drawing equal before half time with goals by Kaitlyn Quarrell and Jess
Mithrush, the game reached full time and would be decided by penalty shots. Best-of-five shots each
and the Eagles came out on top, ending the LEX dream for gold.
Players can take solace in another impressive tournament performance that has continued to increase
the recognition the team has received from university and college coaches across North America.
Players were approached regarding scholarships by numerous coaches from both Canada and the
