SHILO, MB –   October 12, 2010  ----  Northwest Ontario New Democrat MP Bruce Hyer (Thunder Bay-Bruce Hyer with LSSR at ShiloSuperior North) took part in Canadian Forces training at Shilo, Manitoba recently in order to gain a better understanding of Canada's armed services, and speak to soldiers first-hand.

"I was honoured to be able to train with Northwest Ontario's own Lake Superior Scottish Regiment." said Hyer, after participating in live-fire training with the unit. "What a learning experience! I have a renewed appreciation for the incredible dedication and professionalism of our Canadian Forces personnel."

The Lake Superior Scottish Regiment, founded in 1885, is a decorated infantry unit based in Thunder Bay that saw action in both WWI and WWII. More recently, its soldiers have served throughout the world on numerous peacekeeping missions, including operations in Afghanistan. Hyer joined 102 Army reservists from the unit at CFB Shilo on training exercises during the Thanksgiving weekend.

"From time to time, MPs are unfortunately called on to make decisions that may put our service men and women in harm's way." stated Hyer "So any experience that lets MPs walk a mile in their shoes, and get a deeper grasp of what our service personnel go through, is something that most MPs should try to do."

"I was very fortunate to be able to train with the ‘Lake Sups’ and get a glimpse into their training and their lives, even if it was only for a day ...and I want to thank them for the opportunity." said Hyer. "I remain incredibly proud of them, and all our Army, Navy, and Air Force personnel – not only for past heroism, but also for the current generation of Canadian servicemen and women."
