2 million drop-side baby cribs recalled

THUNDER BAY, ON -----  November 23, 2009 ------    2 million drop-side baby cribs built by Stork Craft Manufacturing Inc. are being recalled in the U.S. and Canada after the deaths of four infants.

Stork Craft drop-side baby cribs The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Canadian and Health Canada announced the recall. 147,000 of the recalled Stork Craft drop-side cribs were branded with the Fisher-Price logo.

The recall includes more than 1.2 million cribs sold in the United States and 968,000 cribs sold in Canada, Parents shouldn't attempt to fix the cribs until a free repair kit is available

The Fisher-Price cribs were first sold in the U.S. in July 1998 and in Canada in September 1998.

Major retailers sold the cribs, including Wal-Mart, Kmart, Sears, JCPenney, USA Baby, Meijer and BJ's Wholesale Club, the statement said. The cribs were also sold online at Amazon.com, Babiesrus.com, Costco.com, Target.com and Walmart.com from January 1993 through October 2009.

The recalled cribs sold for $100 and $400 and were manufactured in Canada, China and Indonesia.

Owners of the cribs are asked to contact Stork Craft at (877) 274-0277 or visit Storkcraft.com to order their free crib-repair kit.

All Stork Craft cribs with a manufacturing date between May 2000 and November 2008 are included in this voluntary recall. The manufacturing date can be found on the lower right hand corner of the instruction sheet which is glued on the mattress base.

The cribs were sold in various styles and finishes. The manufacture date, model number, crib name, country of origin, and the firm's name, address, and contact information are located on the assembly instruction sheet attached to the mattress support board. The firm's insignia "storkcraft baby" is inscribed on the drop side teething rail of some cribs.

The metal support brackets used to support the mattress frame can crack and break after stress is put upon them during incorrect installation. If one or more support brackets break, the mattress could potentially collapse and create a dangerous gap between the mattress and crib rails in which a child can become entrapped and suffocate
