Thunder Bay Counselling Centre to Provide Care for the Caregiver

Minimize

THUNDER BAY, ON - January 12, 2009- Thunder Bay Counselling Centre will be providing Thunder Bay Councelling Centreassistance to those who provide help to others on a daily basis. This March, care for the caregiver will be offered through a workshop in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

The Compassion Fatigue: Resiliency and Recovery Workshop is being offered to people in the community who work in a profession where they help others who have experienced trauma, or for family and friends who are in a caregiving role.

Compassion fatigue is a combination of symptoms people can experience as a result of caring or helping others who have suffered. Symptoms include sleep disturbances, loss of energy, increased anxiety, and a loss of competence and hope.

Workers are all affected by the work they do, especially those with exposure to traumatic events. Thunder Bay Counselling Centre’s Manager of Clinical Services, Sheila Arding, says; “The work of helping requires workers to open their hearts and minds to clients, but this process makes them very vulnerable.”

In this intensive one day program, Dr.A. Baranowsky of the legendary Traumatology Institute (Canada) will teach participants the warning signs and symptoms of Compassion Fatigue, protocols for self-assessment, treatment and prevention skills, and useful stress reduction methods.  The TI Institute was originally founded in 1995 following the Oklahoma City Bombing, and is well known for their work in the recovery process following the terrorist attacks in the U.S. on September 11th, 2001.  Baranowsky is the Executive Director of the Institute.

Arding says; “Compassion Fatigue can take a really damaging toll on people, especially if they don’t get help. It is important that those who care for others put their own health and wellness on the list of their priorities.”

Hospital staff, homecare workers, students in the healthcare field, teachers, along with probation and parole officers, are just some of the participants the event has been designed for.

Registration is now open for event that will take place in Thunder Bay on Monday March 8th, 2009, at the DaVinci Centre. To register please visit www.tbaycounselling.com.
