Wind turbines in Lake Superior?

Minimize

THUNDER BAY, ON   ----  October 1, 2010  ----  Seven wind turbine installations involving 900 turbines Catherine Bayne talks to one of the many individuals who stop at the Ontario Government’s lookout at Alona Bayare being planned for the Algoma region of Lake Superior.  Off-shore installations are planned for Mica Bay and Alona Bay on Lake Superior. These installations will provide a precedent for further installations in the water and along the coast.

Wind turbines in Lake Superior? And the deadline to object is Monday, October 4th.  Aren’t wind turbines in Lake Superior like throwing acid in the face of Mona Lisa? A defilement? A sacrilege?

Catherine Bayne talks to one of the many individuals who stop at the Ontario Government’s lookout at Alona Bay. If the Ontario government’s “green” energy plan has its way, a major installation of wind turbines will stand astride in the cobalt water behind her like flailing Goliaths.

Two residents of Weston Road Subdivision on Lake Superior, Bill Hallatt and Bill Van Atte have prepared a summary of the installations: “The Bow Lake wind project has been approved for construction on the highlands in the vicinity of the Montreal River hill and 250 acres have already been cleared to allow construction. This is a project by Vortex, an Irish company.

“Confederation has applied for a project atop "Mile Hill" at Goulais and it will essentially be an extension of the existing Prince Township array. They are tentatively planning for 16 turbines, but they will be larger than those in the existing array. The deadline for comments on this project is September 26, 2010.

“The Gilead wind project is proposed for Mica Bay as an offshore installation in the lake itself. Another offshore project is proposed for Alona Bay. Other projects are being planned at Ranger Lake, Stokely Creek and other sites including a project by the Batchawana First Nation at Spider Lake.

“It is estimated there is a potential of 1750 megawatts of wind power production between Sault Ste. Marie and Wawa. At 2 megawatts per tower this would be about 900 wind turbine towers.”
