TORONTO – May 20, 2010 --- Ontario families including those in Thunder Bay, should savour their last HST-free long-weekend, says Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath.
“This coming May long-weekend is the last one that’s HST-free. Come July 1st, there certainly won’t be ‘no place like this’. In Dalton McGuinty’s Ontario, it’s going to cost eight per cent more to go for a weekend drive through the country or take the kids camping,” said Horwath.
“The McGuinty Liberals are making it more expensive to ‘Discover Ontario’.”
Horwath noted that the HST will affect a wide range of long-weekend and summer vacation possibilities.
“From taking a train to Niagara-on-the-Lake to catch a show to staying in a hotel or northern lodge, the Liberals are making summer getaways more expensive,” said Horwath.
“Even taking the kids to the local pool will cost more because of the HST,” she added.
An NDP study on the HST found that the new tax on gas will cost the average family with two children $232 annually. Recent independent estimates have been even higher.
