THUNDER BAY, ON - February 26, 2010 - Joan Skelton - Of interest to reader, writers, and teachers are two talks by noted author, broadcaster, professor and electric speaker, Dr. Bruce Meyer. He will answer the often asked question What Makes Great Literature? Friday, March 5, Lakehead University, ATAC Building, Room 1001, at 7 p.m.
Particularly interesting to those who would like to improve their written communication is his talk Making Your Writing More Visual at Waverley Resource Library Auditorium, March 6 at 2 p.m.
No dry as dust lecturer, Dr. Meyer has recently been nominated as a top ten finalist for TV Ontario’s Best Lecturer award. At stake is a $10,000 scholarship for his students at Georgian College, Barrie, at which he is a professor of English.
Dr. Meyer’s broadcasts on The Great Books, A Novel Idea, and Great Poetry are best-sellers on the CBC’s spoken word CD series. He has written on non-fiction, poetry, short fiction, literary journalism, and pedagogy. Among his 30 titles are the The Golden Thread: A Reader’s Journey Through the Great Books, Heroes, from Hercules to Superman and Dog Days, A Comedy of Terriers, a poetry collection.
His recent poetry collection, Mesopotamia, is a reflection of Dr. Meyer himself. It is pleasant and easy to understand, yet deep and challenging. His anthology, We Wasn’t Pals: Canadian Poetry and Prose of the First World War, is called ground-breaking.
The initiative to bring Dr. Meyer to Thunder Bay was spear-headed by Bookends, a 20 year-old reading group begun by Joan Skelton and the late Penny Petrone. Stan Kurisko is chair. Bookends received assistance for Dr. Meyer’s presentations from Writers Union of Canada, Ontario Arts Council, Ontario Writers’ Workshop, Confederation College, and Lakehead University.
The workshop on Making Your Writing More Visual is sponsored by Northwestern Ontario Writers’ Workshop with assistance from Ontario Arts Council, The Writer's Union of Canada, Canada Council for the Arts and Thunder Bay Public Libraries.
All are welcome. There is no charge for Dr. Meyer’s talks.
