Hyer Announces Community Arts & Heritage Funding

TERRACE BAY, ON - February 11, 2010 – From the North Shore leg of a regional Town Hall tour, Bruce Hyer, MP for Thunder Bay–Superior North, announced that the application period for Building Communities Through Arts & Heritage funding is now open, and encouraged local unincorporated community groups, Band Councils and incorporated non-profits to apply.

Hyer, Tourism Critic for the federal New Democrats, said “The diverse communities in our region celebrate our past and present heritage in many ways, and I am pleased to announce that funding will be provided to help them do that. Not only are festivities and capital improvements like parks and monuments important to the cultural life and shared history of our communities, but they will be a boon for tourism in our region as well.”

The federal program provides funding for local festivals, activities, or projects that celebrate local heritage or local artists and artisans, and are accessible to the general public. Events such as anniversary celebrations, as well as capital projects that commemorate local personalities or events such as commemorative parks, fountains, monuments are all eligible for funding.

Hyer added “My staff are ready and willing to help local groups apply for this funding. I encourage them to apply early to make sure that, together, we can work out any hiccups in the application process before the April deadline.”

The deadline for the next round of funding is April 30. Interested parties can contact Bruce Hyer’s constituency office toll-free at 1-888-266-8004 or visit for application information.
